Selecting a clutch for drifting is something we all will face sometime in this sport, but selecting a clutch that is suited to the sports tuff conditions will never be made easy. So the Loaded crew has collected information from one of the sponsors of the Drift National series Exedy Racing Clutches, Exedy have sent us the information we needed to assist in selecting the right clutch not only for drift cars but also for any high performance or street car.

Clutches With Ceramic Button Friction Materials.
Exedy ceramic button clutches are designed to accommodate the demands of high power modified engines, Exedy ceramic friction material will transmit increased levels of engine torque without slipping or fading given the correct application.

All EXEDY ceramic button clutch discs have sprung centre dampers to reduce the impact and shock load transmitted to the drive train, safeguarding the transmission and other drive line components.

EXEDY offer two types of ceramic button discs, standard thickness and reduced thickness.

The reduced thickness ceramic discs offer a reduced in inertia to improve shift response, making for faster shifting and improve synchro durability. These discs are approximately half the thickness of a standard disc and are recommended for track use only.

The standard thickness ceramic button discs have improved heat dispersion characteristics and therefore increased durability in demanding applications such as all wheel drive. Even the standard thickness, three puck cerametallic discs are typically lower in inertia than a regular disc and are recommended for both street and track use.

IMPORTANT
With any ceramic button clutch system, there will be some compromise of start-up drivability when compared to a standard clutch. This characteristic is generally deemed acceptable in modified performance cars. Drivers of vehicles fitted with cerametallic clutches on the street should be warned not to ride the clutch to try to reduce the chatter as this will greatly increase the wear rate.

Clutches With Organic Friction Materials.
EXEDY racing clutches are fitted with premium organic friction materials and are resistant to slippage and burst. Increased clamp loads give the necessary capacity to handle modified engines. This is the preferred clutch for street and light horsepower track use.

The Drivability will be similar to a regular clutch, however drivers may experience increased pedal effort, slight shudder and increase cabin noise due to the performance characteristics of the clutch. All of EXEDY clutch discs have high capacity sprung centre dampers to reduce the drivetrain shock and impact.

Heavy Duty And Heavy Duty Button Sports Clutch
In order to complement EXEDYS SC, RC and So clutch kit range EXEDY has developed a locally assembled range of sports clutch.

EXEDYS Heavy Duty (HD suffix) Clutch kits are perfectly suited for use in lightly modified vehicles that are driven in circumstances where the vehicle is likely to encounter stop/start traffic. A high performance clutch cover with increased clamp load which will transmit an increase in engine torque is included in these kits with a standard organic clutch plate creating a performance clutch kit with smooth take off drivability.

The Heavy Duty Button (HDB suffix) clutch kits are manufactured to meet the demands of various forms of amateur and professional drift, circuit, rally and drag racing and are assembled from 100% new component parts. All HDB kits are supplied with high clamp load clutch cover assemblies and ceramic button clutch discs with sprung dampers.
